About Us

The UPM Liver Study Group is a multidisciplinary research group within UP Manila's National Institutes of Health dedicated to advancing liver health in the Philippines through collaborative, evidence-based, and policy-relevant research.

Our Story

The Liver Study Group builds on UP Manila's tradition of liver research and the legacy of National Scientist Ernesto O. Domingo. Its revitalization brings researchers together around a shared commitment to liver health in the Philippines.

Our work connects clinical and laboratory research with public health, implementation science, health economics, and health informatics. Through collaboration, we aim to turn research findings into practical improvements in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care.

We seek to strengthen connections across projects and institutions, share learning, and develop partnerships that complement existing expertise and services.

Our Mission

To advance liver health in the Philippines through collaborative, evidence-based, and policy-relevant research that addresses the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of liver diseases.

What We Aim to Do

Generate high-quality, multidisciplinary liver research across the continuum of care — from molecular diagnostics to population health.

Develop a shared liver research agenda that responds to Philippine health needs and complements national research priorities.

Explore responsible ways to connect liver-related clinical data and biospecimens across studies, with appropriate consent, governance, and long-term stewardship.

Generate evidence to support decisions on liver disease prevention, care delivery, and sustainable health financing.

Strengthen capacity for liver research in the Philippines by mentoring young investigators, hosting symposia, and fostering institutional collaborations.

Address gaps in research and care affecting underserved populations, including people living with HIV and communities with limited access to liver health services.

Building for the Future

We are exploring how stronger coordination, shared research resources, and sustained partnerships can support liver health beyond individual grants. Our priorities will develop through discussion with investigators, institutions, communities, and potential supporters.

New programmes and any expansion of our institutional role will depend on agreed priorities, available capacity, partnerships, and the relevant institutional approvals.
